Basecamp
Yoga Retreat in Belize!
Awaken
your mind, body, and spirit in Belize through the gentle
practice of yoga in stunning natural surroundings.
Yoga By The Sea
Six years ago we introduced Yoga practice and instruction to a few select basecamp departures. After just a few sessions, with a magnificent backdrop of the sun rising over the Caribbean, we were wondering why it took us so long to join the two! Our guests - most of whom had never tried Yoga - told us how much they enjoyed the daily practice. Not only is Yoga a perfect form of exercise to loosen up before or after our day of active adventures, it also brings relaxation, balance, and mindfulness to ease away the complexities and stresses of our busy lives. Join us at Glovers Reef or Lighthouse Atoll as we bring Yoga to the sea with certified yoga instructors on select departures during our season. Please call or email for details. Another great reason to travel with Island Expeditions!
Yoga will be featured on these exclusive 2011-12 departures:

What can students expect from your class? My classes reflect a love for sequencing and alignment. I try to keep it fun and down to earth as well as accessible to all by teaching multilevel classes with modifications for beginners and more complex variations for the well-seasoned practitioner. Students can expect clarity and precision in my cuing and nurturing support at all levels. In terms of style, students can expect the strength and challenge of Power, the alignment of Iyengar with the liquid grace of Flow. From this place of strength and stability we can learn how to expand into greater freedom within our bodies and our minds.
Why Yoga? I came from the Gym and Aerobics classes to yoga, and now I come to my mat to connect to a deep source within….to be in the moment, to dance with my breath, & move with my community and realize our oneness. I feed off of the collective energy and do my best to let it feed from me too! Yoga for me has been the one true constant, the must-have, the elixir of life, the “ONE” that I never bores me and always challenges me as it soothes my spirit, the practice that never fails to satisfy! For nearly 15 years we have been companions and soul mates... yoga is IT for me.
Inspirations: My teachers! My students: witnessing the growth and transformation, and the ability to be in the moment and surrender to themselves.... this is the inspiration and the reward, all rolled into one.
Interests: I am an avid Traveller, and also an enthusiastic scuba diver complete with underwater camera & “discoverers” enthusiasm! You can often find me doing Yoga on my way to the dive site, or afterwards on the way back to base.

Andrea Boys
Since 1992 I have practiced yoga in Belize on the islands and atolls. Recently I’ve been teaching yoga out on Lighthouse Reef Atoll and love the inspiring peace and beauty of the clear blue waters, white sand beaches and swaying palm trees.
I practice classical Ashtanga and Hatha yoga incorporating asana (yoga postures) with pranayama (breathing practices). The tradition of yoga unites the body, breath and mind, and is perfect way to relax, stretch and unwind before or after a day of kayaking, swimming and snorkelling.
During Island Expeditions trips I tailor the classes to fit the group; this means classes are at a beginner level 1, with modifications to deepen the posture for level 2. Typically we will have morning yoga before breakfast and if there is interest we can incorporate some afternoon sessions.
There is nothing quite like doing your sun salutations far offshore on a picture perfect island before a pristine sea or closing your eyes in relaxation (savasana) while the frigate birds circle overhead. Hope to see you there!

Megan Carr
It all started about 5 years ago when my girlfriend literally dragged me to my first yoga class. It wasnt THAT bad so I went back for another and another and pretty soon I was going all on my very own!
Since that first class I've noticed some pretty big changes in my life, physically I feel stronger, mentally I feel more stable and emotionally I feel more secure in my skin. Those aspects alone are what keeps me inspired to make it to practice everyday and share those simple benefits with anyone who cares to listen!
My education has been a rolling whirlwind picking up momentum everyday! Teacher Trainings in Whistler and studying Anusara Yoga in Vancouver are just a couple things which have contributed to my growth as an instructor.
When I look back at my "book" education it definitely steered me in the right direction yet I find I am learning the most when I am working at the bar, snowboarding in my backyard (Whistler) or simply having down time with Nelly (my dog).
I have been teaching yoga since the Spring of 2009, I've taught beginner classes on the floor of a pub, taught people who dont speak a lick of English, seniors, people with disabilities and packed out classes at my home studio (40ppl).
If you have a comfy space and an open mind you can do yoga - anywhere!
I look forward to seeing all of your smiling faces lounging on yoga mats in Belize, in the meantime if you have any questions my inbox is always open carr.meghan@gmail.com
Cheers!
Meg

Tammy Fovargue
The practice of yoga put me in touch with my body and I began to look at how I was using my body in my life. I decided to start my career as a massage therapist in 2003 and in 2008 I became certified to teach yoga. I have never looked back. Yoga and body work have enabled me to continually grow and find new ways to expand myself physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually ( I can attribute my recovery as a runner to yoga as well). Just like my first teacher, I am interested in educating my students on the purpose of each posture and the safest way to “practice”. My training is in Iyengar yoga which is heavily steeped in alignment and awareness of the body within the posture. So, when we do a forward fold, we are not concerned with touching our toes. We are interested in keeping a straight backline from our head to our waist, extending through the waist, grounding through our feet, and feeling the stretch in our hamstrings. My classes are geared toward the needs of my students, and are appropriate for the beginner as well as the advanced student.
This will be the fourth year of Tammy returning to Belize!
