Medical guidlines for travel to Belize
Trip Conditioning
-Although not strenuous—a base level of fitness is recommended for trips with Island Expeditions.
-If you feel out of practice, it’s a good idea to do some light exercising a few weeks prior to your trip.
-For those interested in kayaking, the longest guided paddle is 8 miles and is completely optional. Most paddles are much shorter.
-Guided snorkels last anywhere from 30 minutes to several hours, depending on the interest and ability of the group.
Travelling with a CPAP
-Please let us know in advance if you are travelling with a CPAP
-For trips to Lighthouse and Glover’s Reef Basecamps, we can provide a 12V battery for your CPAP.
-If your machine does not have a 12V adapter you will need to bring a 12V to 110V inverter with the appropriate alligator clips to attach to the battery terminals.
-We recommend checking with your CPAP manufacturer if you have any configuration questions.
-For all other locations you can use your CPAP just like you would at home.
Vaccine Requirements
-There are no mandatory vaccines or shots required for travel to Belize.
-We recommend consulting with a medical professional if you have any questions or concerns—especially if you are pregnant or have any pre-existing medical conditions.
Tetanus & Hepatitis A and B
-We recommend consulting a medical professional with any questions or concerns related to vaccinations.
-We encourage guests to travel with an up to date Tetanus inoculation, and consider a solution for Hepatitis A and B.
-TWINRIX & HAVRIX are two common options for protection against Hepatitis A and B.
Biting Insects
-Biting insects tend to be more prevalent during and near the end of the rainy season—June through November.
-Use repellent and protective clothing in areas where biting insects are more common.
-Although rare, countries in Central America do have some risk for insect-borne infections including, dengue, Zika, and chikungunya.
-Belize was certified malaria-free in 2023; However, a few locally acquired cases were reported in 2025.
