Paddling In Belize

Paddling on your trip with Island Expeditions

Paddling Belize's Outer Atolls and Barrier Reef

Glover’s & Lighthouse Reef

Far from the mainland, sea kayaks and paddleboards provide a quiet, intimate way to explore Belize’s outer atolls. You’ll explore secluded cayes, shallow lagoons, and clear tropical water alive with marine life.  With little sign of the outside world, every paddle offers a rare sense of freedom and connection to the sea.

The Barrier Reef

Closer to the mainland, paddling reveals an ever-changing landscape of mangrove nurseries, coral gardens and palm-fringed islands. Sheltered waters and countless cayes make it easy to move between snorkeling sites, wildlife areas, and anything else that might catch your eye.

Kayaking

No previous kayaking experience is needed to enjoy an Island Expeditions trip — our guides provide personalized support to help everyone feel safe and confident on the water. Before the first paddle, we lead a brief introductory session covering equipment, safety, paddling technique, wet-exits, and re-entry. We utilize the kayaks to access certain snorkelling spots, mangrove nurseries and the shallows along the reef crest. Since our trips involve plenty of time in and around the water, we recommend having a basic level of swimming ability and general comfort in the marine environment.

Paddleboarding (SUP)

Similar to kayaking, no previous experience is needed for our SUP sessions. We follow the same protocol for paddleboarding as we do for all other marine activities — a short introduction followed by guided practice before heading out for extended sessions. Many of our guests begin on their knees before standing. The great thing about paddleboarding in these environments is that you gain a perspective unlike any other watercraft. SUP’s allow you the ability to “walk” on water and see incredible marine life from a brand new view.
