Kayak Sailing In Belize

Kayak Sailing on your trip with Island Expeditions

Let the Wind Guide You

Not only did Island Expeditions bring the modern sea kayak to Belize in 1987 — we also pioneered kayak sailing and remain the only company sailing sea-kayaks in Belize.

If you’ve never experienced it before, kayak sailing brings a whole new dimension to exploring Belize, combining the freedom of sea kayaking with the effortless pull of the Caribbean trade winds. Journey across vast turquoise lagoons, past remote cayes and over vibrant coral reefs while surrounded by the wild beauty of Belize. Be sure to keep your eye out for sting rays, juvenile reef sharks, and seabirds — all frequently sighted during our kayak sailing adventures.

How It Works

Like all the marine activities we offer, no previous experience is required for kayak sailing. Our guides will teach you everything you need to know! Our tandem boats are fitted with a centre bar running along the floor, providing a secure base for the sail mast. A sheet rope acts as your accelerator, while foot-operated rudder pedals allow you to steer. Perfectly sized for our kayaks, the sails need only a light breeze to get you going. Before long, your paddle will be stowed and you’ll be gliding across the lagoon using one of humanity’s oldest forms of ocean travel.

The Pirates of the Caribbean

One fascinating fact about Belize’s atolls—particularly Glover’s Reef—is that these remote waters were once frequented by pirates and privateers. Some privateers, operating under the authority of the British Crown, raided Spanish ships carrying gold and other riches from the New World back to Europe. Today, we follow in their wake, sailing our kayaks across the same turquoise waters and among the very same reefs and islands.
