Feel the Rhythm of Garifuna Culture

Garifuna drumming is one of Belize’s most vibrant living traditions, carrying stories, history and cultural identity from one generation to the next. Garifuna culture is most prominent along Belize’s southern coast, particularly in Dangriga—widely regarded as the cultural capital of Belize—as well as Hopkins, Seine Bight, Punta Gorda and Barranco. In these communities, visitors can experience Garifuna language, music, dance, cuisine and hospitality as part of a rich and enduring heritage. The Garifuna culture is celebrated throughout the year in Belize; however, Garifuna Settlement Day on November 19 is the countries largest national holiday—often taking place over multiple days all across the country.

Drums, Dance and Garifuna Tradition

Garifuna music comes alive through a variety of distinctive beats and dances. Traditional ensembles feature the primero, or lead drum, alongside the deeper segunda drum. Drumming is often accompanied by Sisira shakers, singing and a variety of traditional dances such as the Punta, and the Paranda. Another well known Garifuna tradition is the Wánaragua, which is traditionally performed during the Christmas season and features masked dancers in elaborate costumes.
