Intertidal Exploration In Belize
Intertidal Exploration on your trip with Island Expeditions
Discover Belize's Living Shoreline
At Lighthouse and Glover’s Reef, the shallows around the island reveal a fascinating world hidden along the shoreline. Explore reef crest and mangrove ecosystems in search of brittle sea stars, nudibranchs, octopuses and other creatures adapted to life between the land and sea. Every night brings something new, offering a rare opportunity to observe the behaviours and survival strategies of these remarkable coastal species. Guided by our knowledgeable Belizean guides, each outing brings you face to face with creatures that could easily belong to another planet.
How It Works
The Star of the Show?
Grab your flashlight, camera, and sturdy water shoes as our guides take you on a nighttime safari along the shorelines and reef flats of Half Moon and Southwest Caye. This is a hands-on, low-impact adventure for all ages and a unique opportunity to discover a whole new ecosystem. The best part? It’s all happening right in our backyard. There aren’t many places on Earth that bring you THIS up-close and personal with some of the oceans most fascinating and often overlooked creatures.
The Caribbean reef octopus is one of Belize’s most fascinating marine residents. These masters of disguise can change their colour and skin texture to blend into their surroundings with incredible effectiveness. Eight flexible arms lined with sensitive suckers are used to explore crevices in search of food. Mostly active at night, these creatures spend much of the day tucked into sheltered dens among rocks and coral. Watch quietly and give them space and you may witness something truly remarkable.
