I was very impressed with I.E. & their guides/staff for several reasons.
I am on a severely restricted diet due to food allergies & they were all able to feed me well & safely. The time & energy put into this undertaking was phenomenal & I truly appreciated this personalized care. Being able to do this kind of foreign adventure travel is now available to me!
I was very impressed with how very well the guides attended to the needs of non-swimmers/ non-paddlers in our group on the very high Mojo River. Truly professional care!
I loved going into the homes in Pedro's village. The people there felt truly glad to see us & were very welcoming, wanting to interact with us. Having Pedro on the river with us sharing his traditional knowledge of the Mayan plants/ life was a wonderful plus. He was the very best!!!!
I highly recommend I.E. to anyone looking for this kind of adventure.
Our Ultimate Adventure Trip in November 2015 came at the end of the rainy season and was the first of Island Expeditions trip of the season. It was exhilarating from start to finish. IE was well organized and able to respond to the vagaries of some continuing wet weather that changed our itinerary on the second day, forcing our guides to cancel the trip to the caves due to high water and safety concerns, and substituting instead a thrilling afternoon at the Zip Line at Bocawina Nature Preserve. No disappointments there! The ocean kayaking and snorkelling on Tobacco Key, and Glovers Atoll were out of this world. The accommodations and food as well as the hospitality displayed by guides and other staff was outstanding. That part of the trip was everything a palm beach tropical island could suggest. But the real treasure of this trip was a 4-day canoe camping trip on the Mojo River. Because of the preceding weeks of rain, the river water levels were at the highest that our veteran guide, Pedro, had seen in his 20 years on the river. That made for the most exhilarating paddle as we dropped over ledges for 3 solid days. Safety was always our guides' first concern, evidenced by their scouting out of the next drops (pour overs). Our inflatable 2-person canoes (resembling pencil thin Zodiacs) took the drops with ease, but not without the hilarity of one or another party of two (gear securely fastened to the boats) tipping over and sputtering with laughter upon surfacing.
The professionalism, knowledge of flora and fauna, and hospitality of the guides on all sections of our Ultimate Adventure was outstanding. We particularly enjoyed sharing meals with Mayan families in their homes and getting a bit of a sense of their lives.
This was one of the fullest, most action packed adventures we have ever compressed into a two week time frame. Simply outstanding in all aspects!
In February, our family travelled to Belize for a 10 day vacation. We chose Island Expedition’s Ultimate Adventure.
We were looking for something that involved a variety of activities while getting a sampling of the culture, history, food and natural features of this beautiful little country. This trip exceeded our expectations in every respect!
The staff at the head office helped us with every logistical detail, from finding flights to accommodate our tight timeline to ensuring there would be a birthday celebration during the jungle portion of the trip.
We were greeted at the airport in Belize City then shuttled to the hotel to meet our extended “family” for the next 10 days. We were very fortunate to have a great , fun- loving group of people from across Canada to travel with. We were on the move from that point forward.
There were always activities available and the food was both delicious and plentiful. We had several guides over the course of the 10 day trip and they were all fun, informative and professional.
Here are the highlights of the trip. The night tour of the Belize Zoo (feeding the tapir) and ATM caves with JC were a great introduction to Belize. We then travelled to Tobacco Caye via Dangriga for a 2 night stay in over the water cottages to with plenty of opportunities explore by the area by kayak or the funky little island on foot. This is where our guides Venancio, Capi and Addie joined us. Next stop was Southwest Caye on Glover’s reef for some glamping. Here we had many opportunities to kayak, snorkel, SUP, and sail the kayaks. The patch reefs were beautiful and our guides had a wealth of knowledge of the marine life and a sharp eye for spotting them for us.
Pedro, the seasoned river veteran, joined Venancio and Addie for the river portion of the trip on the Moho River but first we spent a night at Big Falls resort. The resort and rooms were beautiful and the dinner was nothing short of spectacular!
The next morning we drove to the Pedro and Venacio’s village for a delicious, hearty lunch and to collect our camping gear.
The next 3 nights were nothing short of amazing as we travelled through the rainforest on the beautiful Moho River over many waterfalls and through spectacular scenery. There is nothing like the feeling of paddling your boat to the edge of a waterfall and only seeing the drop as you head over the edge. We quickly learned that the louder our guides laughed the more spectacular the landing was.
Before each drop they versed all of us as to what to do to get a good line and where to swim where our landing was less than perfect.
When we weren’t propelling ourselves over waterfalls our guides were sharing their knowledge of the beautiful rainforest. The campsites were spacious and, as always, the food was both delicious and plentiful.
In summary, Island Expeditions coordinated every aspect of our vacation to perfection. For us to plan and execute a 10 day trip with so many varied activities would have been logistically impossible. We were thrilled to have the opportunity to experience so much of Belize in a very short time with a great group of people. It speaks volumes for the quality of a vacation/company when several of the guests on our trip were repeat visitors. It was the fourth trip with IE for four of the guests.
Our Belizean guides JC, Venancio, Capi, Pedro and our North American host, Addie, were wonderful, knowledgeable and enthusiastic ambassadors of this spectacular, diverse little country!
Thank you Island Expeditions for an unforgettable experience!
This was the best adventure EVER and we are so happy we found Island Expeditions - the only way to experience Belize! It wasn't cheap, but it was so worth the money and the memories we have from this trip are priceless.
The food was insane in the best way possible at every place we stayed. We ate so well I actually gained weight on the trip!
I have been on several guided tours and I know how crucial a good guide is to making a trip just 'ok' to making it an unforgettable adventure. Whatever you are paying Jaime - you should double it! He is the best guide I have ever encountered. His personality, knowledge, hospitality - AWESOME! We trusted him completely and he always was quick with an explanation or a fact about whatever we were experiencing or seeing. Jaime also needs a special shout-out for his jungle fare. He made BBQ chicken, smoked ham, smashed potatoes, cole slaw and pineapple upside down cake for us for Christmas dinner - just like everything I would eat at home with my family.
Juan Carlos's tour of the ATM caves was phenomenal. I appreciated his personality, his concern for our safety, his wealth of information and even his effort to get us to the cave first so we could experience it privately with no other tours coming through.
Valencio was great as well for reef and jungle and for his knowledge of Mayan culture and his ability to explain it to us.
I loved Pedro's enthusiasm, especially riding the river - he was always smiling and laughing and you could really tell how much he loves his job.
All of the people we interacted with were friendly and helpful. The weather was perfect. Even the rain in the jungle was good: it rained at night, but was beautiful during the day.
We enjoyed the guides' enthusiam and love for Belize and their desire to share with us. They were enthusiastic, friendly & knowledgeable. The best part of our trek down the river was the laughter and cheering by our Mayan guides. All the guides took a genuine interest in our two kides, age 8 & 12, and encouraged them to try new experiences. When they were successful, Jamie, Pedro and Vanancio were right there, cheering them on. It made this trip an amazing one.
Juan Carlos knowledge of the cave was amazing and on the river portion of the trip.....the two Mayan guides Ben and Pedro.....made the trip for me. It is one thing to hear about the river and jungle from a knowledgable guide....it is quite another to hear if from two guys who live it!! What they shared about their country and way of life was amazing. Also kudos to Todd....personable, knowledgeable, charming and an amazing cook. Give these guys a raise!
Food was great! What I would have liked to see was a chance to have a couple of more drinks after dinner with everyone....it was a great chance to bond and get to know one and other while in camp. I would happily pay more for this privilege.
It rained almost every day but didn't bother our trip and the sun always came out eventually. We thought it was a wonderful experience and Belize was an interesting country with culture and lots to see and do. All places were great - it was nice having transitions like Big Falls Lodge after the islands and before the jungle portion of the trip. We really enjoyed the local Belizean guides - they add so much information and culture to the trip.....and Pedro and Mario are hilarious!
Came on the Ultimate adventure with my wife and two children (8 and 12) and we all had a fantastic time. I have to compliment Island Adventures on how well the trip logistics were handled - no waiting for transportation anytime on the trip, everything was like clockwork, and there were a lot of logistics to take care of! All the guides were knowledgeable and good company. The Belizean guides had the energy & enthusiasm of kids and were so good with ours. This isn't Disneyland - the caving was several hours underground, and the river had lots of action - if your kids are adventursome they'll love this.
It's an extraordinary trip, with an emphasis on "extraordinary": out of the ordinary, beyond the ordinary. The sheer variety of activities--zoo prowling, wild-caving, snorkeling, sea kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, river paddling, hammock surfing, breezing out, camping, socializing, learning, learning, learning--makes the trip feel as though it's a month long--there's so much packed in that you can barely believe that it's a short nine days. And the beauty: jungle river, barrier reef, tropical fish, howler monkeys, birds, Glover's Reef! But most important, I think, is this: you get a good sense of how much Island Expeditions loves Belize and its people, from its hiring and guiding practices to its financial support of small Mayan villages to its enthusiasm for the history and culture of the country. It's an impressive, even moving, experience.
I must admit that initially I balked at the price, but as the trip progressed I appreciated where the money was being spent and most importantly the significant infrastructure costs associated with a company offering such a diverse number of tripping options. The most gratifying part was the number of Local Belize guides and Belize residents employed by Island Expeditions, necessary to make a trip of this nature come off so seamlessly! There were no disgruntled employees and as such a positive attitude infused that whole experience. As a former river guide, I was impressed by the preparation and safety concerns of the staff, the work ethic of all involved and especially the joyful laughter of our Moho river guides. Their desire and ability to educate us about their lifestyles and Jungle/river playground, was absolutely wonderful. We are in our mid and late 60's and had no trouble keeping up and very much appreciated being part of the gang. We would recommend Island expeditions to anyone and without a doubt... it is money very well spent!
As you can imagine, traveling as a single woman can be scary and intimidating, but with you and your guides, being the professionals that you all are, I felt safe, secure and at ease and that's really comforting for me.
The beauty of Glover's Reef was impressive, as were the short excursions that the guides took us on to test our kayaking skills for the upcoming Moho River.
The Moho River, more than just a river to me, it's where I learnt a lot about myself and where I developed a love for adventure travel. It was challenging and intimidating for me at times, which made it very exciting.
The people begin their conversations with a smile. All the food was outstanding - Heart of cohune palm curry with coconut rice along the Moho river or fresh fish, veggies, local fruit out on the cayes - Great!
You really have an impressive group of people working with you.
People are super friendly and helpful everywhere I went. Always willing to give a tourist a hand.
