Useful Belize Maps
As can be seen by studying Belize maps, the country's inland region is etched with numerous rivers and waterways as well as lagoons and swamps. Inland Belize also offers large tracts of undisturbed wetlands, Caribbean pine forests and rainforests, all of which provide ideal habitats for a multitude of species of exotic wildlife. In fact, Belize's renowned Cockscomb Basin is a forest reserve as well as the world's only jaguar reserve.
The Cockscomb Basin is situated in south central Belize on the eastern slopes of the Maya Mountains, which rise to a height of 3,600 feet and are easily identifiable on Belize maps. While the foothills of the Maya Mountains are where you will find the spectacular Cockscomb Basin reserve, they are also the location of several Mayan ruins. These ruins, and other ruins located throughout the country, provide another excellent reason for venturing inland from the coast of Belize.
In particular, great archaeological sites to visit include the ruins of ancient Mayan cities such as Lamanai, located to the northwest of Belize City, or Altun Ha, situated 31 miles north of Belize City. Other sites of interest to mark on your Belize map include the Actun Tunichil Muknal cave system and the ruined city of Lubaantun.
Of course, it's easy to see on any Belize map that the country also boasts a long stretch of coastline along the Caribbean Sea. This coastal region is particularly popular among vacationers and is a great place to enjoy a variety of water sports as well as to discover stunning coral reefs, tropical islands and a profusion of marine life. Of particular interest is the Belize Barrier Reef, which is marked on most Belize maps and stretches 165 miles. Not surprisingly, the Belize Barrier Reef is a choice destination for those interested in snorkeling, kayaking and scuba diving.
When studying your Belize map, you will also see that there are three atolls located off the country's shore. Home to bountiful coral reefs and a truly incredible diversity of marine life, these atolls are also premier destinations for snorkelers and divers as well as vacationers who simply wish to take in the stunning scenery and amazingly clear waters of these world-famous atolls.
