Glovers Reef & Mayan Caves - 7 Days / 8 Nights

Thirty six miles offshore of the Belize mainland lie a group of tropical islands cradled within a turquoise lagoon and surrounded by a living coral reef.  Glovers Reef Atoll is considered to be one of the richest tropical marine environments in the entire Caribbean.

Our private island base of over 13 acres is perched on the southern edge of the atoll with a dramatic view facing east over the main reef crest and the open Caribbean. Based from our comfortable field camp we are fully equipped to spend six and a half days sea kayaking and kayak sailing, snorkeling, diving, fishing and windsurfing.

Highlights

The first night at the Tropical Education Center / Belize Zoo, plus one night at beautiful Manatee Lodge followed by six days at our private island base-camp on Glovers Reef Marine Reserve. Our inland day of discovery includes an exploratory trip into the sacred caves of the Maya people.

Activities

Caving, hiking, kayaking, kayak sailing, snorkeling, scuba diving, C-breathing

After our adventures each day we like to reward ourselves with a bounty of fresh seafood, island baking, tropical fruits and yes, even rich, decadent deserts! Glovers is ideal for those who wish to enjoy the comforts of a well-appointed field camp yet want an active and flexible day-to-day schedule.

undersea adventure travel On arrival in Belize, before heading out to Glovers, we have an opportunity to experience the diversity of the rainforest and the rich Mayan culture of the interior. Working with guides from the Belize Tropical Education Center, our itinerary includes a rare chance to view the nocturnal wildlife of Belize, and then, in the jungle, we explore a fantastic limestone cave that was used by the Maya as a ceremonial centre thousands of years ago.

Exclusive to Glovers, is our underwater Sea-Breathe System ( TM ) which provides air for divers and non-divers to depths of 25 ft. Also available are optional Scuba certification courses, resort courses and equipment rentals.

The Manatee

manatee in their natural habitat

Known in Belize as the "sea cow", the West Indian manatee is a little-known marine mammal that inhabits the estuaries and coastal regions and on the reefs of Belize. Adults grow to 10-12 feet long and can weigh over 1000 pounds. Classified in the order Sirenia, manatees are closely related to the elephant, their evolutionary path thought to have split some 50 million years ago when a related species adapted to a marine environment to feed on underwater sea grass meadows.

Today, manatees are endangered in much of their habitat, and Belize is one of the last strongholds for this docile herbivore.

Glovers Reef

One of three atolls offshore of Belize, the waters of Glovers Reef are renowned for the remarkable clarity and profusion of marine life. Glovers Reef Atoll was named after pirate John Glover who used the area as a base from which to raid Spanish merchant ships laden with riches plundered from the New World. The shallow water reefs and numerous islands offshore of Belize were ideal waters for pirates to elude the larger Spanish ships.

fishing in paradise An elliptical shaped reef (20 miles long and 7 miles wide) located almost 40 miles offshore of the Belize mainland it is thought that Glovers Reef Atoll is the richest marine environment in the entire Caribbean Sea. Within Glovers Reef there is a shallow lagoon with over 700 patch reefs which is unsurpassed for snorkeling and sea kayaking.
