Belize is gifted with some of the most spectacular caving in the world. Like much of the Yucatan Penninsula and other parts of Central America, Belize's underground is riddled with limestone caves, creating underground networks of sinkholes, waterfalls, and caverns that hold many mythical treasures. Not only are the limestone karst geology of the Belizean caves beautifull with their stalactites, stalactmites, columns and veils, but they are teaming full with Mayan artifacts and signs of centuries of use. There is little wonder why the ancient Maya people were drawn to these dark openings in the ground, where they belived their gods lived. "Xibalba" is the mythical underworld created by the ancient maya, where they belived their gods lived. At times of strife and hardship, the maya would descend underground with offerings of food, livestock, and even human sacrifice.

Two of the most exciting caving options in Belize are the Caves Branch River of Caves, explored mainly by inner tube. Details can be found here. The second is Actun Tunichil Muknal which is an amazing day-trip, combined with a 45 minute hike and travelling a subteranian creekbed almost a mile underground to a cermemonial center. Details can be found here.
