Belize has 240 miles of coastline on the Caribbean Sea and is home to around 450 islands or ‘Cayes’. We look at the best beaches on the mainland and further afield where some of the real gems can be found, on the atolls that stretch along the Belize Barrier Reef Reserve System. This continuous reef structure runs the length of Belize, parallel to the coast and is one of the most pristine reef ecosystems in the Western Hemisphere.
It's nearing the end of August and many of us are still soaking up summer, but with winter just around the corner, now is the time to start planning your escape from the upcoming cold season and ensure a stress-free warm Belize vacation.
Getting to Belize
Belize is blessed with fantastic beaches, numerous palm fringed tropical islands and the perfect turquoise waters of the Caribbean Sea, providing many beautiful swimming spots. However, if you are venturing inland to Belize’s rainforests and mountains, try seeking out one of these five swimming locations, some complete with cascading waterfalls.
Here is a list of our favourite inland Belize swimming spots and what makes them so special:
1. Mayflower Bocawina National Park
Belize is synonymous with the coconut palm and this beautiful and useful tree is captured in many images of this Caribbean destination. Coconut plays an important role in everyday life in Belize and coconut production contributes significantly to the national economy.
Located on the southern Belize Barrier Reef is the remote coral atoll of Glover’s Reef. This protected UNESCO World Heritage Site has one of the richest marine environments in the entire Caribbean Sea and provides the ultimate ocean playground for all ages.
Bring the whole family! They’ll all love our Lighthouse Reef Basecamp located on the beautiful island of Half Moon Caye. This tropical island paradise is located 55 miles off the Belize mainland and offers endless adventure for young kids, teens, adults and grandparents alike. There’s something for everyone at this designated UNESCO world heritage site.
